THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN AND THE ANALYSIS OF THE SUBLIME AND THE BEAUTIFUL

In this paper the analytic and comparison in definitions of sublime and beautiful will be worked on mainly through Longinus’ “On the Sublime”, Burke’s “ A Philosophical Inquiry into the Origin of Our Ideas Of the Sublime and the Beautiful” and Kant’s “Critique of Aesthetic Judgement”.
Longinus, is a figure who became most fashionable by 18th century thanks to the translation of Boileau in the second half of 17th century and also became the center of criticism on the issue of sublime. Longinus most frequently emphasizes natural genious, sublimity as a thunder bolt, irresistible and even sometimes does not appeal to emotion and in his work gives a number of ways to achieve sublimity.
Looking at Harland’s work it is possible to take several quotations about the style of Longinus.
“Rhetorical tradition provides the background to Longinus’ treatise On the Sublime and its subject is is what he calls hupsos-height, grandeur, sublimity.
And another prominent comparative view as “In contrast with Plato, Aristotle and Horace, Longinus makes no distinction between poetry and prose.” And adds about true sublimity, “True sublimity stands up to repeated examination by the educated reader, and withstands the test of time, appealing to all people of all ages.” And “sublimity is an inborn gift, is innate and it must be cultivated; art is necessary if the natural ability is to be used to the best effect.” Through a brief look Longinus lists the sources of beauty in five steps. The first one is the grandeur of though which signifies the ability to form grand conceptions because sublimity is regarded as an echo of a noble mind. Also the concept of mimesis has a quite important place and puts forward the idea that imitation of past models should not be regarded only as something mechanical instead a sense of creativity is utterly necessary. The second way of developing the degree of sublimity could be named as sublimity through phantasia or visualization, suggesting the importance of vitality of descriptions. But the differentiation between oratory and poetry over this issue is that in poetry the descriptions may be unrealistic whereas in orator’ speech must be vivid and realistic. These two are the most important ones due to being innate talents. And the third source for creating sublimity is the effective use of stylistic and rhetorical figures as a means of increasing the emotional impact of literature. And the fourth source is what Wordsworth opposes severely, noble, poetic diction and the fifth and final one is the utilization of dignified and elevated composition and effective arrangement of words and also a well established conception of organic unity.
